The design system

Project overview

I collaborated with various teams at the Royal Navy, which aimed to establish a unified and cohesive visual identity across all digital platforms. Our work involved several key components:

We began by conducting thorough research to understand the Royal Navy's brand values, target audience, and existing design elements. This helped us identify areas for improvement and ensure that the design system aligned with the organisation's mission and goals.

We developed comprehensive design guidelines that outlined the principles of the design system. This included specifications for colour palettes, typography, iconography, and imagery, ensuring that all visual elements were consistent and reflective of the Royal Navy's identity.

A significant part of my work involved creating a library of reusable components, such as buttons, forms, navigation elements, and cards. These components were designed to be flexible and adaptable, allowing for easy integration into various applications and websites while maintaining a consistent look and feel.

I prioritised accessibility throughout the design process, ensuring that the system met the needs of all users, including those with disabilities. This involved adhering to WCAG guidelines and incorporating features like high-contrast colour options and keyboard navigation.

Throughout the project, I engaged in regular collaboration and feedback sessions with stakeholders, including designers, developers, and representatives from the Royal Navy. This ensured that the design system met their needs and expectations while fostering a sense of ownership and buy-in.

Overall, the work on the Royal Navy design system aimed to create a strong, cohesive visual identity that enhances user experience and effectively communicates the values and mission of the Royal Navy across all digital touchpoints.
